About

Who we are – and what we do

The International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IASSIDD) and its local host for the 2021 European Congress.

IASSIDD

IASSIDD is an international, interdisciplinary scientific organization whose members include researchers, educators, clinicians, and advocates working in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The association traces its roots to international congresses on the scientific study of mental disability held between 1960 and 1963, which laid the groundwork for ongoing international meetings of researchers and practitioners.

Membership is open to individuals and organizations involved in the scientific study of intellectual and developmental disabilities, with special rates available for people from Low and Middle Income Countries (LAMICs).

The International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities brings together researchers, educators, clinicians, and advocates from around the world. Founded on the legacy of international congresses dating back to the early 1960s, the organization fosters interdisciplinary collaboration to advance knowledge and improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. The 6th European Congress in Amsterdam embraced the theme of valuing diversity, recognizing the profound shifts needed in research, policy, and practice. This gathering provided a platform for meaningful dialogue across cultures and disciplines, reinforcing the commitment to inclusive, evidence-based approaches that respect the dignity and rights of all individuals.

The 2021 European Congress was held in a hybrid format, blending virtual participation with limited in-person presence in Amsterdam. This adaptation reflected the realities of the global pandemic while maintaining the spirit of international exchange. Attendees engaged in keynote debates, workshops, oral presentations, and poster sessions covering topics such as mental health, parenting, care systems, and community inclusion. The congress underscored the importance of active participation and inspiring dialogue within the IDD field. By offering both online and on-site options, the event ensured broad accessibility and continued the vital work of connecting professionals committed to advancing disability studies worldwide.

What does IASSIDD mean and what does SIRG mean?

IASSIDD stands for the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Its work is organized through a network of Special Interest Research Groups (SIRGs) that focus on specific themes within the broader field.

  • SIRGs bring together researchers, practitioners, and self-advocates around defined topics.
  • SIRG activity shapes the congress programme, academies, and ongoing collaborative research.
  • SIRGs link European participants with colleagues worldwide.
